The 10 best beachside hostels in Europe
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/where_to_stay/article6161534.ece
They’re cool, they’re cheap and they’re just yards from the sand: Europe’s new breed of beach hangout knocks spots off pricey resort hotels
Featured hostels:
- Cascais Beach Hostel, Portugal
- Sunflower City Hostel, Rimini, Italy
- Hotel Paradis, Nice, France
- Enjoy Urban House, San Sebastian, Spain
- Pink Palace, Corfu, Greece
- Melting Pot Hostel, Tarifa, Spain
- Bayrams Tree Houses, Olympos, Turkey
- Hippo Hostel, Budva, Montenegro
- Down Town Hostel, Malaga, Spain
- Goofys, Newquay, UK (does not offer dorm beds for single travelers)
All of them offer dorms for solo travelers except Goofy's -- the lowest price I could find on Hostelworld for a solo traveler was USD $168 per night.
Update from Goofy's: "Our current price (May/June/September) for one person in a double room is roughly USD $50 if booked in advance, USD $40 if booked on the day of arrival."

You´re still vengeful about my remark that Australia is a boring destination, compared to the USA? :D
You´re right that most beaches here are less than awesome, but most people don´t go to a beach for the quality of the sand or the waves, but because they want to drink Sangria from buckets and get laid in the process. Our beaches are certainly good enough for that. I think that Ibiza, for example, would be an obvious place for a large party hostel.

I wonder why there aren´t more beach hostels in Europe.
Is it that there aren't European hostels near beaches, or that the author possibly just made a somewhat random list of 10 beach hostels in Europe? :)
(This style of article is what I was referring to in my social media presentation in Dresden about using lists to build traffic and hype. Make a list of 10 items as headers, fill out the content, and then give it a title to capture attention -- like "best".)

I couldn´t even name 10 beach hostel so the list can´t be that random. There simply aren´t a lot of them.
I wonder though why the Flying Pig Beach Hostel isn´t mentioned.
There are more niches like that: there´s a huge number of hostels in Swiss smalltowns, but only two in Austria.

no, not at all. ive never fully understood why australia is so popular. its warm and friendly... not sure what everyone else really sees in the place. theres certainly more going on in the states - i cant wait to make my up to NYC from costa rica this summer.

true, and australia does have the best beaches in the world when it comes to sun, sand and surf.
perhaps because beach culture in europe is slightly different - sangria and sex, as you said - means that the whole 'beach bum town's that litter the australian coast dont really exist in europe. hence, its not so much about the beach as it is the beach parties - and cities tend to have more nightlife. european beach life does tend to be far more seasonal, with - as mentioned - a lack of beach town culture, most people only go to the beach in the height of summer.

Yes, maybe.
When party people think of a place where they can waste themselves for a few days, they think of Amsterdam, Barcelona or Berlin.
Maybe that´s because so many beach towns have such a bad reputation for the people they attract. Have you ever been in Lloret de Mar? It´s disgusting.
People who stay in hostels tend to be a little elitist and don´t want the drunk plebs nearby.

The market in the Medeterainian resorts is pretty much sewn up by the package tour operators, which don't exist to any large degree in Australia. It would be very hard for a hostel to compete on price with the oversupply of beds in these places outside 6 weeks a year.
There are some nice beaches in Northern Europe, but obviously the weather isn't so conducive to lying around on them. As is often the case, the best beaches in Australia are some of the less popular ones. I could easily never visit Bondi, but it's a magnet for backpackers obviously as it's central. Some of the beaches on the south coast of WA are magic.

There may be an oversupply for people who book package tours, but not for those who want to avoid them.
This could be a niche for small towns which are not yet buried under concrete bunkers filled by Thomas Cook and TUI. I´m thinking of a Cesky Krumlov with a beach.

That sounds like home!
The trick is to find a place a long way from an airport; too far for the tour company transfers.
The only downside is that it may be reflected in the HW location rating. The only point that we have dropped so far this season is on location where the guest said "Plakias is a little bit hard to get to, there are only 2 buses a day from Rethymno, but once you are there the location is great." Fair comment.
