The trick is to find a place a long way from an airport; too far for the tour company transfers.
Not necessarily. The trick would be to find a small town willing to do it. It would have to refuse to let the big hotel corporations in. That would mean less bribes for the mayor, less business for the local construction companies (i.e. the Mafia) and uncertain success.
Lencios de Bahia in Brazil is a good example that this could work.

I don´t know if a gringo is involved there.
It is obvious though that there´s a general plan behind it. Lencois receives A LOT of tourists, but there are no big hotels, only B&B´s and hostels. Their standard is way above brazilian average, so there must be some quality management system in place. There are several tour companies in town who run a common "school" for tour guides. Only licensed guides are allowed to run tours.
Apparently, there is a common sense in town that this is the way to go.

I've just been to Newquay, spotting hostels. (Driving in Newquay is hopeless: you can drive OK, but you can't stop. There are plenty of good car parks, but when you don't know where something is, you might have a longish walk to it, and you have to predict whether to pay £1 for an hour or £2 for 2 hours for parking.)
Of the 10 hostels on my list (not including Goofy's non-hostel), Goofy's and 2 in the same road I couldn't find any evidence of, 1 took groups only, another was rooms-only with no kitchen or common areas, 2 showed no evidence of being a hostel, and 1 (which was unpromising) I didn't search for. That left 4. This included by far the best St Christophers I've seen, and the view from there is equal to the best view from any hostel anywhere (I'll post a photo.)

... but we do offer a whole room to single people (backpacker, traveler or otherwise), and if they call on the day there would be no single person supplement (or minimum stay)...

... this statement is a little inaccurate - and is actually based on two people sharing a double room for two nights.
Our current price (May/June/September) for one person in a double room is roughly USD $50 if booked in advance, USD $40 if booked on the day of arrival.
We're not the cheapest place to stay (if you want USD $10 per night, a dorm at St. Chtistophers is ideal), we aim to offer very good value for money (you get what you pay for).
We're not permitted to call ourselves a Guesthouse/B&B, and I'm not sure this site's definition encompasses the full spectrum of what is considered to be a Hostel (see comments in definition thread).

It's very interesting that they won't allow you to call yourselves a Guesthouse/B&B. I'm going to read the PDF document you linked to in your other post.
