I welcome the musicians, both as a hostel manager and as a backpacker. Just not in the middle of the night when people are sleeping.
#3 is great. The showers are free. Please use them daily!

- Thou shall not play thou’s guitar for us
- Thou shall not turn the light on at 5am
- Thou shall shower every day
- Thou shall not snore, pass wind, hum, talk, walk around, or sing incessantly during sleep.
- Thou shall not spend hours on unlimited internet at the hostel.
- Thou shall not have sex in the dorm room
- Thou shall not waltz into the common room and change the channel on the common room TV
- Thou shall not steal food from the communal hostel fridge
- Thou shall take care of thouself by picking up thou’s own rubbish in the dorm room
- Thou shall not think themselves God Of All Backpackers and Knower of All Things Travel-Related

Item #1 seems like a random addition to an otherwise good list: "Why did thou feel the need to bring a musical instrument backpacking anyway?" :confused:
(IMHO, music crosses language barriers and leads to some of the best travel experiences... though musicians probably shouldn't take over a single small common area unless asked.)

So, it's considered rude to come in and change the channel without asking?
It would certainly be considered rude to come in and switch off the TV without asking.
But why is it not considered rude to come in and switch the TV on and choose your own choice of programme without asking?:confused:

Based on these Ten Commandments, I think I've been a good backpacker. I try my best to be the most considerate person, I hope others would do the same. :)

Thou shall not play thou’s guitar for us
I would have thought that playing a guitar is a positive idea, provided it is a tuneful piece of music and does not sound like someone practicing.
Then, in a hostel in Australia I encountered a person with a guitar, complete with amplification, sitting against a wall of the kitchen, playing music of his choice, loud enough to be highly annoying like a loud radio. :eek:
I therefore now support the proposed commandment 1.

how about instead of the guitar - thou shall not decide to repack thy backpack in the room in the middle of the night, especially if thou hast crinkly plastic bags... or maybe thou shall not get shitfaced and puke or piss in the room?
