A California boy stopped for a rest in Parkersburg Friday during his 3,000-mile cycling trip across the country, a journey he hopes will raise funds for a variety of charities.

Joseph Machado, 13, began his trip in his hometown of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., in June. With his family following closely behind carrying food and supplies in a trailer, Machado has cycled around 2,400 miles in 34 days. He hopes to reach his destination, the White House in Washington, D.C., by early next week...

Along the way, the Machado family has spent the night in hostels, fire departments, churches and police stations.
