I was wondering how many hostels here assign specific beds to guests? In my opinion, the time it saves on housekeeping isnt worth it. a) too many people pick other beds and b) its one more thing to worry about when trying to fit in bookings.
I do understand the appeal and I'm sure if it works well its great but has anyone else just found it to be too much trouble? I've worked in places that assign beds, dont assign (just pick one) and one that used bed tags (attach this to whichever bed you take). What system(s) do other people here use?
I ask not only for my own research purposes but I also want to try and convince the boss here to ditch the idea and try something else.
Any thoughts?

I have tried that... We have wooden beds, so ive put plastic name tags holders on the side of each bed... we just used a little piece of paper to write peoples name and bed letter... The problem is to get the staff to do that right... So I just gave up again...

Model of night trains "upper = cheaper" can be adopted. Charge small additional fee if guest request guaranteed bottom bed. If it is not important for guest, just allocate any bed you have available on arrival.
But I thinkg bed to be allocated to prevent free movement from bed to bed. Some lax guests may be happy from such scheme, but most of guests feel discomfort if their bed will not be assigned for whole stay. For example, I will be not happy, if I'll found some one on my bed next evening.

Wonderful idea. I met a "perfectionist" staff who had huge troubles at maintaining the assigned bed system. My friend was moved from a bed to another because his old bed, despite used by him for a few days already, was assigned to someone else and he was requested to move to a bed just a step away.
