Backpackers in the class of 2009 travel the world at the click of mouse. These days backpackers have the pick of top quality gear, top travel deals and top travel destinations without having to move one single step. However, how has backpacking in 2009 changed compared to backpacking in 1999 and could we survive as backpackers if we reverted back to how things were in 1999?

should compare pre-Internet days, when word of mouth was the only way. sure there were a few guide books but nothing beat info from others on the road. Thats how I found out about the full moon party here on the Islands. Couple of U.K boy's said " Dave, This is the place for you. Found it, arrived with no set accomidation..... I better stop here .. I miss those days.

I think there are both a positive and a negative side to this fact. Nowadays, with the help of the World Wide Web it's so much simpler to choose exactly where you want to go / accommodate; everything is at a few mouse clicks away. Back in 1999 you would have simply pack a bag and choose a destination based on what you've heard from friends or from other experienced backpackers. However, chances for something to go awry were also bigger back then. I found this article pretty interesting.
