This could be a general thread on balconies in hostel,
whether they are useful, a happy addition, or a safety hazard, drunk people foaling off.
What are your experiences with balconies and do you like them in the hostel settings??
But for now I have a more specific question.
If you had to decide to assign a balcony to the room, would it be for a dorm so that the bunch of people can hangout on it, or would you assign it to a double room so that the couples can be romantic on it??
By assigning I mean putting the room next to the balcony in the hostel planning phase.

i always like it when there is a balcony attached to a dorm room. you can sit outside with your fellow guests and smoke, have a wine and get to know each other. whereas if its attached to a double, it just seperates the people in that room from the rest of your guests, so the atmosphere may suffer. unless you could put a hot tub on the private balcony and market it as the honeymoon suite? he he.:)

I would put the balcony on the double room. By attaching it to the dorm you might encourage guests to form a clique in their room. It’s best to concentrate the socializing in the common areas. That’s what you have them for. Otherwise your social scene will be scattered thinly all over the property and never really thrive.
Guests who book private accommodations have essentially expressed a desire to separate themselves a little more from the rest of the guests. Giving them the balcony not only gives them an opportunity to get away, but it also adds perceived value to the room so you can justify charging more for it.
