I was thinking of putting a shelf at the head of every bed for items such as books, clocks, telephones, i-pods, torches, etc. The boss thought that this would make the rooms even more untidy so I have come up with the idea of a simple box - as shown on this sample - but a bit longer and, obviously, without the clamp! Your thoughts, please.

Looks good... although IMHO it would be hard to clean the dust out from the inside corners if you have the box entry from the top, especially if it's not covered with a door.
I've seen a nice solution in Sir Toby's, they put a mini locker mounted on the wall beside your bed, which you can also lock with your own padlock as well. Ideal for phone and valuables, IMHO.

These photos aren't from Sir Toby's, but it is something like these?
(The only issue with this specific model is the way the door opens -- if it's not closed securely it can drop open and hit you in the face. A side hinge or top hinge might be better.)

We don't do any locks and keys here - only open storage. We also have a mini "hoover" with a long nose - not much of a job for the cleaner once a week.

Not a great pic but, this is Lub D Hostel in Bangkok. They mounted small wooden boxes beside each bed for non-secure storage. You can also see the prox activated power outlets and bedside lights assigned to each bed. Nice place...

Of course... I forgot that very important feature what YH Plakias have and made it as a backpackers' heaven: There is no need for even just the feel of security... Sorry for that! ;)
It is completely different here, up north. We do have to ensure a secure environment, even if there was no any occasions so far, it makes people feel safe.
So I guess just go for it then, it looks nice as it is.
