Beware of planning permission costs!

Just a word of warning about planning permission in the UK. Gordon Brown brought in many stealth taxes during his time as chancellor and one of them was to wack up the price of planning permission.
A hostel now pays the same amount per sq metre as a 5 star hotel or any other commercial building, so the prices quickly mount up.
Currently it's £335 per 75 sqm of floor space. If you have a kitchen, living room, reception etc, then it all adds up and you'll find yourself paying out thousands of pounds just to the planners.
We are planning on building Norwich Backpackers (www.norwichbackpackers.co.uk) and our planning is going to cost over £13,000!

I guess you have been lucky with taxes! I just found out today the fee for tapping into the city water-line to add required fire sprinklers in around $40,000. Crazy!!!

Hang on a minute. You are not yet a hostel, you are APPLYING to be classed as a hostel. Why should you have to pay at hostel (hotel) rate? The application might have been refused, and then no hostel has existed or will exist!
This seems devious to me.
