Hi all, we are starting a new hostel in Seville, Spain, within some months and are thinking about shared dorm rooms distribution. We think small bedrooms (4 - 6 guests) seem to be more interesting, since they seem to be booked earlier and at a higher price than big rooms (8 - 12 guests).
Do you agree with this? Any ideas about advantages of the bigger rooms? Maybe they help create hostel atmosphere,...?

I am from Bilbao, and also trying to build a new Hostel in this city.
The same you think, I had. At the end I have decided to design bigger rooms (10 persons each), and create divisions among the bunks to save the intimity of the persons. In this way I save up money in the construction: air-heating, walls, more and more,,.

For us I think it makes sense to have smaller rooms from an economic point of view, even though building costs, as you say, are higher. But we were wondering if there are some other advantages from the bigger rooms that we are missing, since this is our first hostel...

I'm definitely a fan of small rooms, and think 6-8 is the sweet spot.
Any more and there always seems to be a snorer or someone checking in or out at three in the morning.
Smaller rooms win out because it's easier to make friends with a tight group, and it's easier to get a good night's sleep!

Our bigger dorms (8-10 beds) sell much better than our smaller ones (4-6 beds) because they're cheaper. Our 4-bed dorm is by far our least popular room even though it's really nice.
There is probably a higher likelihood of meeting a travel buddy in a big dorm because there are more chances to make a connection, but I don't think most travelers really take that into consideration when booking. Just staying in a hostel in the first place serves the same purpose because of all the common facilities.
