So, for a while now I have wanted to start a hostel. After years of travelling and thinking about the idea I would like to make it happen and I have the idea to start one up in the town of Wanaka, New Zealand. I am from New Zealand and know wanaka well. It is expensive to start up a hostel here but I know that this place cannot fail. The reason being that nearly everyday accomodation is booking out, theres not enough beds to support the tourists flocking in. Its a hidden gem just starting to get discovered and eventually will be like its neighbouring town queenstown which is the adventure tourist capital of the world 1 hour from wanaka. The tourism is starting to increase every year rapidly here and its absolutely beautiful and busy all year round. So I want to get in quick !

Hi Joel,

Great to hear of your plans. New Zealand is a great country for hostels. Travelled throughout for a year and that is where I got my love for hostels before starting my own. I visited Wanaka as well which is definately a great tourist spot. I would just be careful of the mindset that it cannot fail. Yes I understand your thought behind it but make sure you stay focused and work hard on what you are offering. You can still fail even if you are full if you don't have the proper business structure and pricing to keep the doors open. Have you started writing your business plan? Do you know what size of hostel and style of hostel you want to open? Would you lease or buy a building? Do you know the regulations for opening a hostel in New Zealand?
