I think a 24-hour or 48-hour cancellation policy is appropriate. If they give you fair notice that they can't come, then I would refund their deposit.
We have just 4 private rooms that are $22 a night. Not a lot of money, so we take a 50% deposit on bookings.
What do you think would be a fair cancellation policy? Do you think it would be bad if we didn't offer any refund for cancellations?
I have seen a couple of people searching for "cancellation" in the analytics, so I thought maybe I should write something about it.

We do 48 hrs notice for full refund. You can't say no refunds at all... That is not fair. Plus, you would need to make that very clear "NO REFUNDS AFTER BOOKING IS MADE", and this will drive people away because people don't like to be tied down like that.

ut to 4 days before arrival acceptable. depends on destination.
probably 48h is not enough to get new reservation, but 4 days sounds better

It all depends on your location. We are downtown in a major city so we get plenty of walk ins. But if you are somewhere more remote I could see how 48 hrs might not be enough time.
