I thought they showed all types of properties as it is, although they do usually put all the hostels first.
Hi guys !!!
I was wondering if the two leading bookings providers, hostelworld.com and hostelbookers.com will change the default search, from ''hostels'' to ''all types of properties''...what is going to happen ???
I can't even think...

They already do this. It depends on how many hostels are in the city.
For example, Miami has 8 hostels, but they list "All types" (22 in total) in the default view.

Forgot to mention :
If they do it in cities where the default booking search is by ''Hostel'' and the competition is tough...what is going to happen ???
For example there are cities with lot more guesthouses and hotels than hostels, and the default search is by Hostel ONLY.
Hotels can beat hostel rating and Guesthouses can beat hostel price.

Im sure most cities have more guesthouses and hotels than hostels...and eventually there will be more on hostelworld and hostelbookers, but the fact is they are hostel booking portals, and if they start showing hotels and guesthouses where there are hostels, their customers will get annoyed and stop using them, so it is in the booking engine's best interests not to do this.

Sounds good !
but...nothing is impossible when is about money...
Websites for hotel bookings makes lot more money than they do, so they might consider to change it at some stage...

Hostelworld is already in the hotel market with boo.com and trav.com. They sell hotels on hostelworld because its an upsell to them...they get better commissions due to higher prices.
No doubt some people will use it for hotels and guesthouses, but hostelworld needs backpackers, and as a backpacker, if hostelworld hid the hostels and kept showing me hotels only I would stop using them and use hostelbookers, or hostelsclub or gomio or whatever else there is. If theres one thing these booking engines aren't doing well its creating brand loyalty.

Stozza, you make me to sleep well tonight !!!
I think a true backpacker are thought to be extremely brand loyal.
You're right, they should create a feeling of brand community ! What I can see is that HW try hard to do it...but not enough !

Hostels can beat hotels and guesthouses in fun.
They are different places and satisfy different needs. Their ratings will be higher if they can satisfy their customers needs.
Remember the guidebooks have always listed hotels and guesthouses, now more than ever, but hostels grew up in that environment. People enjoy staying in hostels, and will choose them for that reason.
