I'm just wondering what other people do in relation to changing sheets during a guests stay.
We have guests staying for a week and three days into their stay, they asked when we are going to change their sheets.
We go into our occupied rooms every day to replenish toilet paper,soap, empty trash and do general room checks, but so far we have not been changing the bed sheets until after each guest has checked out. Most guest only stay 1, 2 or 3 days.
The guests in question sought us out as we are basic, affordable (really cheap) accommodation but I think they are looking for hotel standards....or
am I totally out of touch and I should be changing the sheets every couple of days - help :0 !

I'm new to having a hostel, but it is my personal opinion that guests expecting to have their sheets changed after a few days are expecting a bit much. I don't think most people change their sheets at home every three days (right?) so why would they need to at a hostel? That being said, if someone asked, I would have the sheets changed for them.

I don't think I ever changed dorm bed sheets for guests, but if someone is there for a while, the front desk could ask, "would you like a new set of sheets? Just bring the old ones to the front desk and we'll give you new ones."
For private rooms, I would ask the housekeepers to keep an eye on the sheets and if they look too wrinkled or a mess, I would change them. The guest is assuming that their $50/night room includes all the services they paid for every day. If new, clean sheets are included in the $50 price but they only are included on the first night, shouldn't the subsequent nights be discounted? :)
At least, that's what I assume that some guests are thinking, and it's good to make everyone happy, even if they are a little high-maintenance... :)
We never made the guests' beds for them in dorm rooms--only in the private rooms. I don't think they need to be changed every day--only when they look bad or the guest asks.

Hey- thanks for your input. I see what you mean, but if you were to pursue that line of thinking then it shouldn't be out of the question for us, as a
hostel, to - move guests into different rooms for each night of their stay or to request that guests check out each morning and check back in at
check in time for each day of their stay.
We don't however operate like that because, well firstly, its not whats expected (an unspoken assumption) and secondly its totally unreasonable. In
the same way, I think most guests would see it as unreasonable to expect a discount for each subsequent night of their stay because they have slept in their own bed. I think most people in general are not this pedantic :).

I normally change the sheets every fourth or fifth day if a guest stays for an extended period. If they ask for fresh sheets before that I'll happily change the bed for them. The same goes for their towel - if they want a fresh one I just swap out the old one. Most people will never ask though.

I echo RB's above statement.
I do change the sheets for guest that stay more than a week ,without being asked, every 7th day.

I'm not saying that one should change the sheets every day--only that I wouldn't hassle the guest if they asked for private room sheets being made or changed, or whatever.
I'm not saying they should get a discount, only that some guests are high-maintenance, and that might be their perspective on the situation if the hostel were to put up resistance to a request for new sheets in a private room. :)
If a private room guest asked me, "when are you going to change their sheets?" I would reply with, "how often would you like them changed?" ...or, "we'll change them every X days, or just let the front desk know when you would like a new set."
Otherwise, I would just ask the housekeeper to keep an eye on private room sheets and pay attention to how long the guest has been there.
If someone comes to the hostel and is a nice person but has a phobia about bacteria and wants a new set of sheets in the private room every other day, I'm not going to argue with them. I think that very few hostel guests are like this, so it's not a typical problem. :)
That's interesting about changing dorm bed sheets for guests. I didn't really consider doing it for them, but it sounds like a good idea. 200 beds and 3 flights of steps -- we just said "bring your old sheets down and we'll give you new ones..." :)

I'm with Josh on this. If the room is $30/night this includes a set of check-in/check-out procedure and depending on how your property operates, a made bed. Some hostel issues you a set of sheets at check-in. If you're one of them, then just exchange them.
Since a guest is expected to bring his own sheets down at check out, request up to having the bed re-made every day the guest brings their sheet back is not unreasonable.
Semi-long term guests offer you a source of steady income for the duration of their stay for less work. While you may see a guest who asks for new sheets every few days as high maintenance, there is no question that it is less maintenance than processing seven one-day guests. If you refuse to make such simple accommodation then then I would expect a discount for each day your staff don't have to do the extra work, so like $30 + $27 for every day thereafter to reflect housekeeping/front desk procedures eliminated.

I doubt you'd have much luck with that expectation. I don't recall ever staying at a hotel that remakes the bed every day, but then again I don't stay at a lot of hotels - certainly not up-market ones. I would fail to see why it should be an expectation at a hostel.

Here we change sheets after five nights. If a guest ask for new bedding item before the 5th night, we charge for that...

I used to own a rural tourism facility, and -because of nature (environmental) sustainability- our policy was that guests should put towels and/or sheets in a basket if they wanted/needed them be changed. In nature environment it was not good to wash everything everyday, and as was said before here, nobody changes sheets and towels so often at home. Obviously, in a dirty environment or places where guests do adventure activities, sheets and towels remain less days clean in opposition to some cities where guest just go to shoppings and theatres or walk around...
But in any case it is good to state as a hostel policy what you decide and comuicate clearly to the guests (announcing in a paper hanged at the room door and/or at the bathroom door so anybody can read)
