I flew from Greece to NYC for the last GOMIO Conference. Was it worth it? Definitely yes. 3 days of interesting talks and lots of networking with people who are passionate about our industry.
Hello, All
I'm trying to decide if I will go to the World Hostel Conference this December.
I graduated college in 2007 and have been in the hospitality industry ever since.
I started out working in food service at Walk Disney World, in Florida.
I worked at my first hostel for about a year starting last September. I enjoyed what I did and I was able to help the hostel immensely with their guest computers, website, social media, front desk computer and reservation processing. I left that position because I felt it was time to move on.
Now I'm back in my home state of Michigan doing computer work for people and trying to decide what my next move is. I'm a dual citizen of USA and Canada, so part of me says that I should try living in Canada for while :-) But that is off topic...
This hostel conference seems like a great opportunity, but it would also be a financial strain.
The cost of travel seems to be the most expensive part, and then the actual conference isn't cheap, but I'm all for learning new things and am trying to justify the cost to myself.
Has anyone attended a conference in the past. Was it worthwhile?
Tom

Very worth it in terms of North America. I too was at last years conference in NYC and was nice to be able to discuss with like minded types versus the typical tourism conferences which are hotel heavy!

My wife and I are going because we see this as a great opportunity to get answers around our opening a hostel in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. We'll also be looking for future managers with the hopes of opening the hostel by the end of 2012 or spring of 2013. As was mentioned earlier by Canhostel, mixing it with like-minded people will help spark some direction for you and others.
