Since a lot of you are thinking about opening a hostel, I'd like to point out a great way to solve the financial part of the challenge - crowdfunding. There are many popular platforms out there, however none of them offer a category or an appropriate option for tourism and travel industry. That's why we decided to bring crowdfunding to tourism, and we just launched a dedicated platform about two weeks ago. It's called TravelStarter.
Among our projects we also welcome hostels - we are currently working with 8 pilot projects, and most of them are accommodation related businesses. One of them is also a hostel, and they have managed to raise almost 25% of their goal in the first two weeks, so this is definitely a good channel to expose your new (or also existing) hostel. See for yourself!

I think Travelstarter is out of business. I submitted a project over 3 weeks ago and have received no feedback. I believe an automated system has accepted my project for evaluation, but there's nobody home to actually look at it or to answer questions. My project is Hostel La Antigua Capsula.
In frustration, I have launched a campaign with indiegogo, but I'm not sure it's the right forum for hostel crowdfunding. Anyone?
