Dormitory building separate from Front Desk-thoughts?

My dad owns 2 plots of land in a hip part of town in a happenin' city in Texas. Right now one plot has a building on it (currently his pottery shop that he's run for 35 years) the other plot is a large garden. Our original idea was to build a separate building in the garden plot where we would have the reception, lounge, communal kitchen, dorms, roof garden --3 stories. Now we are thinking of converting part of the pottery shop into the reception, lounge, kitchen and making the new building where all the dorms are. That would help us save on construction costs.

It would be a short walk between the two buildings connected by a nice garden and walkway but I can't help but feel like it might present problems for the reception to be in a building separate from the the dorms. Does anyone have advice on that?

There are a number of logistics considerations (housekeeping, security). But atmosphere-wise, I think it's possible for this to work as long as it's not possible for guests to go directly to the dorms without going through the common spaces. My personal philosophy is that most people are inherently shy and some people will take the non-social path to their room which hurts the social atmosphere of a hostel . You want people to have opportunities for receiving a pleasant hello or even a smile so that friendships can start.

I agree. Plus, it’s likely to help control noise issues and let people sleep better if you keep all of the common spaces and social areas in one building and the dorms in the other.
