Easy way to improve a hostel's quality

I think one of the easiest ways for a hostel to improve quality is for the manager (whoever makes decisions) to spend a night or two in a dorm at the hostel every month or two, using the guest bathrooms and other facilities. If a problem is found, don't assume that "there haven't been complaints about it, so it's fine to ignore." I think the problems should be fixed :)

Hostel travelers typically aren't looking for complete luxury, but they want to avoid little annoyances. They want everything to "just work" without a lot of little frustrating moments.

Staying in a dorm is a quick, easy way to see things from a guest's perspective.

What do you think? Does anyone do this?

I do it, not as often as you suggest, but I would say quarterly. I actually don't live in Costa Rica any more, so when I go back to check up on business I end up sleeping in a dorm room.

I have a small hotel in Mexico, and my girlfriend and I make a point of staying at the hotel at least two nights a month, always in different rooms.

I like getting feedback from friends that stay at my hostel too. I know they'll be honest, and sometimes I think an owner or manager, even if they stay in the dorm, may not see some problems because they're so used to the way things operate.
