She frequently overnights in international hostels, such as one very familiar to her in Santiago, Chile. "I know my way around. I've been there at least five times." A year earlier at Christmas time, she stayed at the international hostel in Quito, Ecuador, down the street from the Hilton Hotel. A new addition to the hostel is a penthouse apartment. "I'm expecting I'll be back sometime. Imagine a nice little room at the top! These things happen to me all the time. It just gets better and better because I'm out and about."

Nice story. Our oldest guest was an 84 year old woman from Australia. Her reasoning was if she wanted to be in a hotel room all by herself she would just stay at home. Loved the comraderie. In our new location our oldest has been an 80 year old female New Zealander and a 78 year old Canadian male. They definitely stand out but have had no issues as they love chatting with other guests.

There are some interesting older travelers who stay at hostels...
At one hostel I worked at, there was an older German woman who I think had been traveling on a bicycle for seven years...
At another hostel, there was a guest from Hawaii who had been a child in Honolulu during Pearl Harbor in WWII. That was interesting -- though one can never be completely sure about the stories people tell...
Another time, a woman who must have been in her 80s or 90s showed up... but had forgotten all her money on the kitchen table at home and didn't use credit cards. I was going to pay for her stay until she worked out the problem and paid me back, but the hostel owner wouldn't let me. So she flew home... then flew all the way back for her vacation.

we had a long term guest back in edinburgh who was (i think) 74, he'd been in the hostel for a year and had been in hostels for longer than that. funny ol' guy - laurie his name was. he had a few good stories. he also had the occasional bad day when i think his mind was starting to slip and he wigged out a little. nothing too bad of course, just got a little cranky.

Love stories of older folks traveling!
When I worked in a hostel in Peru, there was an 80 year old partying harder then most younger folks. Chatted with everyone and made everyone laugh all the time. I hope to be as alive and open minded at that age.
