I doubt Starwood is getting as many bookings through FB as their own website - just that the proportion of bookings vs visits to the sites are the same.
Starwood also operates a series of chains, most of which have pretty strong brand loyalty 'ratings' and if i remember correctly, they collect a LOT of data about their guests and share it amongst the various hotel chains. this certainly makes FB an obvious booking source; for many guests checking the westins FB page is the same as checking the official westin homepage. id be very interested to see how many of the bookings theyre receiving are return guests or guests who've stayed at their other locations.
in that regard, individual hostels have a severe disadvantage. you need to know about the hostel in order to find it on FB - something that has always struck me as a serious weakness. if FB had some sort of easily accessible 'directory' of various businesses then that could work but as its currently purely network based (you need to search yourself or know someone who knows someone) then id imagine its hard to genuinely attract new clientele.
