In order to open a hostel in Romania you need to get a “project” from a specialized company that is essentially an evaluation of your building. They will tell you all of the installations and precautions that would be required of you in order to comply with local laws. Poland is probably quite similar in their requirements.
It wouldn’t be unusual for them to require any of the following:
- Emergency lighting that comes on when the electricity goes out
- Signs with floor plans indicating escape routes and locations of all fire extinguishers
- Smoke detectors that have both an electrical feed and battery backup and are wired into a central alarm system
- Sprinkler system throughout the building
- Fire hose installation
- Fire doors that close automatically
- Installation of fire escapes (potentially involving enlargement of windows to give access)
- Widening of stairways to ensure they meet the minimum required clearance (100cm in our case)
- Flame retardant spray treatment for flammable construction materials like wood
- Insulated electrical wiring
They may also require:
- Fire response training for all employees, including a breakdown of responsibilities for each team member in case of an emergency
- Fire insurance
Have they mentioned the specific fire protection measures that they want to you install yet? Have they told you which of their good friends is authorized to provide those services? ;)
