GoMio is holding their next hostel conference in New York City, November 15-18, 2010:

[INDENT]"GoMio.com announces the World Hostel Conference in New York City from November 15th to November 18th. In the tradition of the eight previous European Hostel Meetings, GoMio.com is planning this event so that it will be a valuable learning, networking, and enjoyable experience. The conference is designed to promote the development of the hostel industry and foster communications among hostel owners and managers. More information will follow in the next few weeks on the schedule of events and how to register."[/INDENT]

It's great to see a large hostel event happening in the USA...

All of the Gomio conferences until now have taken place in Europe, so understandably there have always been lots of European hostels in attendance. Would those of you who attended the previous conferences be willing to make the trip to New York this year?

Would those of you who DIDN'T attend the previous conference be willing to go to New York? (I'm not just curious about Europeans, but also hostels from everywhere else in the world)

I have always found the Gomio conferences to be very rewarding because they consisted of presentations that were put on by hostels, for hostels, about hostel issues, with the goal of helping everyone to make their hostels better. I can stand behind that 100%. What really makes the events a success is the networking and sharing of ideas that takes place there, so I am curious to know how many people would make the trip.

I was really hoping that the next Un-Conference would be in Berlin in November and then I would holiday down through Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

Never mind - it looks like the next Un-Conference will be in October in Cluj Napoca when I am still working.

So . . . I am thinking now about the GOMIO Conference in NYC then down to do a lot of walking and cause a bit nonsense in Panama. Hostel Mamalena be warned.

Great! We're already building our HostelManagement.com contingent then! (Maybe we should make T-shirts:p)

For everyone else who wants to go or for those who are on the fence, what would you like to get out of the conference in order to make it worth your time? I know that the whole event is still in the planning stages, so if there are specific things that anyone wants to learn, discuss, or share with other hostels, now is a great time to tell it to the organizers!

Do any of you have something that your hostel does particularly well and you would like to teach the rest of us?

Personally, I would love for someone to give a *brief* overview of some of the most useful software that is available for hostels (PMS software, accounting software, any other wonderful piece of technology that would make our lives easier). I don't want a sales pitch, but I would like to see a suggested list with comparisons and have a little time for a general discussion.

I would also like to see someone present on ways to generate supplemental income. I know this one has been done before, but it can't hurt to remind everyone. Laundry, tours, souvenirs, bike rental, restaurant/bar arrangements, drink sales... What brilliant ideas have been successful for you?

If anyone has any experience getting grants or other free money/financial support for their hostel I would love to hear how that worked out.

What would YOU like to learn at the conference?

I think it will be great. New York City is a "must visit" destination :)

If you're traveling from far away and have time after the Conference, there is relatively cheap transportation from NYC to many places. Examples:

Washington DC -- interesting city that can be reached from NYC for under $10 by bus, round trip. As low as $1 if going one-way.
South Beach, Miami -- it should still be summer in November: flights under $200, or a train for $125 one way
Las Vegas: flights under $350
San Francisco: flights under $400
Central America: flights are around $200 to $400
It's also easy to get to Boston, Montreal, Chicago, and other interesting spots.

I'm looking forward to it...

Absolutely, that would be a great topic! Start putting ideas together.

I have developed a 'sociability index' which I have applied to as many hostels as possible in Gt Britain on my site www.uktrail.com . I would like to extend this index to hostels everywhere, but it does ideally need a personal visit to the hostel.

This sounds really tempting - i love NYC. $1300 return... long way to go for a week or so. ill have to check at the new job whether i can get the time off (and perhaps score a small expense account as a representative of Nomads :) ). find out in a week or so. fingers crossed.

This may seem like a dumb question - but is there any more info on this event? I cant seem to spot anything on the gomio site - aside from an odd 'sticker' from the NYC department of buildings...

could well be staring me in the face somewhere
