Hey!
So I know this is a little early... :)
But I've worked/stayed in many hostels before and I'm managing one in Europe at the moment... I plan to spend a few years traveling Europe working in hostels... When I get back to Canada I will try and set up a hostel in BC. (probably whistler because its a second home to me)
As I am a kayaker and snowboarder and avid outdoorsman, I want to make the hostel geared to outdoors and adventure tourism etc.
The building will be split into a backpacker hostel, and a longer term hostel for the seasonal workers etc, which would be designed more like communal living areas to allow snowboarders and skiiers looking to stay in Whistler all season a cheap place to stay with like minded young people. the 2 buildings would be sharing many of the same common rooms ect... but designed to keep the hostel feeling like a hostel and the long terms and short term guests seperated..
It would possibly also include my sisters Tattoo Shop... (Girls with Guns Tattoo)
My dad is a partner in an architecture firm, so it will be a really well designed building for a fraction of the cost. I would like to include an area to screen films as well as a mini as well as a set of stands, which can be used for concerts and to build half pipes and have regular events... make sure it really gives back to the community as well... etc...
there will also be a bar on site. :D
As I am an enviromentalist, it will be as Green as can possibly be built. And since my father is a LEED specialist it would also be built to take advantage of every tax break and incentive possible.
As I know a lot of important locals.. including the mayor.. (I'm a high level organizer for the political party he is a member of) (name droping i know...) The hostel will be well connected and supported by the community.
As I am a Party Animal, it will be a party hostel.
There are no REAL hostels in Whistler... But I think now that there is more infrastructure and better transit to Whistler (thanks to the Olympics) It will become more popular with backpackers heading through BC.
I know its early... But I will need partners and/or investors... So just throwing it out there in case anyone else likes to think long term (or someone is able to move this to the short term with some serious financing!!)
I think it could be a really great opertunity. Whistler is going to deflate after the Olympics and then its the perfect time to buy property... so lets talk. just send me a message, because most of my plans are things I dont want to share on the board. I have not crunched any numbers, or done any research, or fished around for possible favors... this is all just hypothetical at the moment... but it dosn't hurt to talk about it. :)
