Start a Hostel

Hello everybody:
I am new in this matters, so i hope to do it well.
I am building up a new Hostel in my city (Bilbao, Spain)and one of the things I am worried about, is if it is necessary to manage or not staff at night. On what it depends?.
On my first opinion, I was thinking to have them, depends on the occupation, for example up 50%.
Another idea could be use security cameras.
Please, I would like to know your own experiencies in this subject, as it`s very important for the businees plan.

Hi Iñaki, Welcome to the site!

Based on my own experience, I think it is important to have a responsible member of staff on site (or at least on call) at all times.

Guests can arrive and depart at any hour of day or night, and someone should be there to take care of them. Guests can also be irresponsible at times if there is no one to keep an eye on them, which can lead to problems with noise, theft, destruction of hostel property, non-paying visitors, etc. If an emergency situation arises (medical, fire, etc) you will want someone to be there who can handle it.

Whether you need someone to be there at night depends on the location and what the area is like, the type of guests that you want to attract, and the local laws.

Thanks for your recomendation. I have followed the discussions you show me.
I imagine it depends in the size of the hostel, the rate occupation, the overheads,..
Surely, to have nightstaff would be the best, but in my numbers it could cost about 45.000 euros/year (8 hours x 365 days).
In the starts of any business this count is very important and could be the key of the survival. So finally, I´ll try to create a mix system of night control that guarantee the security and confort of my clients.
