Anyone have tips on using music to encourage a good atmosphere at hostels?

From my experience here are a few tips:
Have a lot of music, a minimum should be the equivalent of 500 cds.
Have music from many different genres and periods.
Know your music well.
Do not plan a whole evening's worth of music.
React with what you play to the atmosphere in the hostel (the above video was taken after a litre of raki had been consumed!).

I've been playing Mumford & Sons (Irish) and Amadou & Miriam (ghana?) a fair bit recently which has been going down well. Then maybe some Kid Cudi and Jackson Jackson if it gets a little rowdier.
Ive always been a BIG fan of letting reception (or whoever's in charge of the music) put their own spin on the tunes being played, within reason of course. I wouldnt want to hear the same music being chosen by different staff.

www.grooveshark.com keeps playing all the popular songs automaticly or you can create your own playlist it has millions and millions of songs and best of all its legal it has the newest songs and german folk it even has the timboektoe jamba ;)
