I just came across another example:

Travel articles & guides can significantly increase traffic, build links, and sell beds if done right...
In the near future, it will be common for hostel websites to have built in travel guides.
Why only capture traffic during the booking process when you can imprint your hostel's name on backpackers during their initial destination research? Instead of convincing them to come to your hostel after they have chosen their destination, you can help them choose their destination. A hostel's website could even be used to convince people to go hostelling in the first place.
Here's an example of a hostel that is moving in that direction, using a "piggy back" marketing technique:
(by "piggyback" I mean placing content on 3rd party websites)
Blog software or content management systems make it easy to build online travel guides on your own website.
There is nothing preventing even the most simple hostel website from becoming a major travel resource for backpackers. There is a huge potential waiting to be tapped.

Here's a print version of a hostel travel guide:

Convert to HTML and it would bring extra traffic.
More pages = rank for more keywords = more traffic.

Like 3 months ago, i caught up with a Google GAP and he mentioned that one of the best ways of positioning your page is by adding extra info that would be found along the google-searchers.
By positioning you page, chances of being found when someone types, hostel in bla bla bla, could be way more.
Of course all the extra info comes from guides of things to do, history, etc....that it is also helpful for people planning their trips back home...

Definitely -- the more good pages of content your site has, the more links the site can attract. Basically all inbound links are beneficial to rankings even if they don't point to the page that targets your main keywords...

Another example of the "travel guide" concept is the HI Northern California email newsletter. (subscribe here)
It sends people information why they should travel to a certain area.
(I'm mentioning it because I just read the latest issue.)
I think that competition isn't just about the other hostels in the city -- it's also "my city vs. staycation". Hostels have the ability to give people a reason to visit their cities. Why should travelers choose your city instead of another city? I think that a hostel's website and newsletter can help people decide...
