I have stayed at many cheap hotels and guesthouses in South East Asia. Usually you can get your own room for fairly cheap, so there are few places that have dorm type rooms.
I think travelers are usually fairly prepared when they travel in South East Asia for power cuts, insects and the heat. I think it is what makes traveling in the region unique and appealing to people.
Most foreign hotel owners I have met do it more for the lifestyle, rather than to simply make money. Rather than the problems you have mentioned, at least in Asia, you have corruption, political troubles and the difficulty of foreign ownership, that makes running this type of business a struggle.
