Err, no. These are the highest rated hostels with at least 50 ratings. It doesn´t matter if you have 51 ratings or 1000.
Hostelworld just started featuring hostels as "Top Rated". Just go to any listing page like this one and sort by rating.

The first 3 hostels get a "Top Rated" mark and gold star.

Hi guys,
Do the 50 reviews have to be exclusively from Hostelworld? Because I have 51 reviews and still no star. But 8 reviews are from Hostels.com users.
I feel a little bit of a child expecting to get my star.
Thanks!

I know the feeling. I have been waiting expectantly for our star, after we got over 50 reviews and are no. 1 for ratings in our location. No star though. Does there have to be a minimum number of hostels in your particular location does anyone know?

I wouldn't be surprised if they have a monkey drawing names out of a hat to see who gets a star.

52 reviews, top rated in my town, more than 18 reviews of 100% and still no star. I think the teacher does not like me...
But my town has only a few hostels as well (14), but I think that would be enough, right?

That applies to the Hoscar ceremony, but the monkey is behind the stage! ;)

Tel: +353-1-4980700. Hostelworld's customer service phone number. Give'em a call and ask your buddy... They have to listen to their customers (us!), so have your say! ;)

How many ratings does the current top three hostels have each?
UPDATE: I've checked your hostel and found out you only have 44 reviews from HW, the 52 reviews you've got is for both HW and hostels.com reviews. If you don't get the star within the next 7 reviews, it's worth to ask what's going on...

There is still no one top rated here.

I thought that it could be it. I'll wait then until I get the 50 exclusively from HW to start complaining, heheh.
Another question on this topic: This hostel in Brazil has 182 reviews with a rating of 98% - http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Barra-Guest-Hostel/Salvador/15038
Do you have any idea why it's not on the Top Hostels of the Month on HW? Check the 4th place: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/The-Naughty-Squirrel-Backpackers-Hostel/Riga/5932 - 158 reviews with a rating of 95%
Really, these guys confuse me. And if I am frustrated about a star, I imagine how the guys from Barra Guest can be frustrated for not being on the first page as world's top rated.
Cheers!

I think there's some European bias by Hostelworld. There's only one hostel in last years top 10 outside of Europe.

I really hope not, because this would be really unfair.
I thought about it and maybe they count only the reviews from the last month.

On top of the bias that I think there might be, there are tons of hostels in Central and South America that don't use hostelworld. This is still a part of the world where we have hardcore backpackers that use word of mouth and physical guidebooks. Luna's Castle in Panama City for example. Might be the coolest hostel in all of Central America. They have so much business that using hostelworld would be a loss for them, they don't need to lose that 10% to HW.
