Does anyone have tips for cleaning up mold problems?

Any environmentally-safe solutions?

Mold on ceilings & walls, in air conditioners... or worse?

I've seen mold problems in a couple of hostels...

Well, I have many years experience fighting mold that tends to build up in bathrooms. The main problem is lack of ventilation. The first step to avoiding mold build up is to assess your ventilation needs and install at least 50cfm fans. Although this can be a costly venture, especially if you have 30+ bathrooms, the long term returns will be well worth it. You may also try repainting the bathrooms with mildicide paint, which is a great preventative measure.
For quick fix, try using a bleach based solution. Spray heavily and vacate/let it work its magic.

A note on bleach....while it works for the short term, it is not a long term solution.

We switched to a paint with moldicide in it and have found ones with the mold product 'milled' into it, rather than added afterward work best. This has really really cut down on mold build up, but as the other poster said, ventilation is really the key.

I've seen mold problems in a couple of hostels...

Make sure your cleaners know how to prevent mold, ventilation is the key. Some molds release spores into the air, most are harmless, but you have no idea which, if any of your guest may have allergies. Your HK should be checking the bathrooms daily.

Such amounts of mold can be a severe health hazard. Doing nothing in such a case is criminal.

I was going through some of my hostel photos and found this other case of hostel mold in a basement dorm. You can see the mold coming through the paint in the far corner behind the bunk. It's much worse than it looks because the mold appears to painted over:

It smells so bad it was making me nauseated while sitting next to the stairwell one floor higher. It was the last available spot in the hostel and they were charging the equivalent of USD $30 for a dorm bed in that room even after I complained. Totally disgusting.

We are located in the seaside, so there is a lot of humidity and in mold as a natural consequence. We’ve always managed to maintain it under control but we recently found out how to clean the very little spots of mold in our drapes. The key was spraying bleach and then using the steamer. You don’t want to breath bleach steam, so don’t forget buying masks. The process does damage the drapes tissue, but in my case it was worth it. Hope it helps more hostels.
