How is the occupancy like ?

In some countries prices are extremely low !!!

Overall, I think is visible everywhere...

id like to say i lost my job because of the recession... but really, i just wanted to go to central america.

my personal and ´'professional' opinions are quite different though, i know a few people who've been hurt (including my folks, who lost upwards of 30% of their retirement funds over the last 6 months, "they'll grow back right?") by it, but i wouldnt worry about the hostel industry.

that said, the effect on exchange rates means some hostels ARE going to suffer whilst others will boom. the drop in the pound means the UK should be getting a lot more eurozone folks, but a lot less americans (despite the fact that their dollar is somehow surviving) and poms are probably headed to the continent. id imagine that developing countries are probably going to see an increase, and im seeing a LOT of yanks down here in central america... but i guess theres always loads of them...

in all honesty, why go spend 30 dollars on a dorm bed in europe when you can spend 8 on one in panama?

HB.com are saying the same think.
''Is cheaper for backpackers to go to England instead of Dublin. Dublin has to drop the rates a little bit, to get more bookings...
But in the same time they are saying: '' the percentage of travelers coming to UK and Ireland is 17,5% down on last year''

This is not a joke...some hostels will definitely suffer because of the recession.

Anyway, Chris, make sure you enjoy in Central America !!! You, the true blues can't stay in one place anyway ! Traveling is a gene in your Aussie blood !!!:)

That is very good question! Hope you're having a great time down there. And enjoying the warmer climes. Although the weather is nice up here at the moment for a change, so it feels like summer.

oddly enough, one thing im short of is aussie blood (kiwi mother, brit father)!
but you're right, settling doesnt come naturally to me. :p

warm would be nice... its 36 here and i feel like im walking around with a hot wet towel on my head.
but im getting a tan and off to the beach in a couple of days, so im hardly struggling :cool:

back to the topic, one thing i think we're all a little guilty of is lumping all hostels together; the collosal drop in icelands currency means iceland is actually affordable for people now, so i guess/figure/hope hostels there are doing ok, whilst amsterdam and paris (notoriously expensive) are probably seeing a real drop off. i do wonder if 'flashpackers' are noticing a drop in weekenders etc whilst the more rough and ready hostels (and locations) are still getting the dirt poor backpacker types?

There´s a hostel in Vienna now selling BASEMENT dorm beds for € 10.80 - even now in high season. They seem to do quite well.

I guess we still have lots of flashpacking weekenders - the weekends fill up nicely. The trend I notice is that cheap hostels without lots of reviews get even less bookings now. People want to stay where everybody else seems to be.

We will suffer badly when cheap airlines go belly up. There are two in Vienna - Airberlin (not really that cheap anymore) and SkyEurope, they have just filed under "restructuring" - the Slovak equivalent of chapter 11. They make a last attempt by selling all tickets for € 25 now, but when they go under and no other carrier replaces them we have a problem.
