How do you recruit a new staff? I mean, do you just call the people interested for an interview by phone or you speak in person to them?
I'm really curious to know that.

Interview them in person if possible. I've gotten hostel jobs over the Internet and by phone interview, but it took work to talk them into doing it, and one of the hostels I ended up at was run so badly the manager was eventually taken away to prison in an FBI sting worthy of a Hollywood action movie :)

In person is always better since you can see what you are getting. I got a job over the phone recently and would have preffered the interview to have been in person. Avoid the temptation to think "anyone will do" as it can back fire on you. I get the impression that the Human Resources function in some Hostels is vastly underestimated. Write up a Job Analysis for the position in question and match the right applicant to the job.

Hiring 'blind' is scary. i say that, but ive managed to score a couple of jobs with only an emailed CV and 5 minutes on the phone.
the one advantage to long term guests i've found, is that we have a pool of people we can 'judge' and potentially offer jobs to.
some people attach a lot of weight to a CV. i was always raised to see a CV as your 'foot in the door' but its not necessarily indicative of the person as a whole. i guess it depends on what the job is, who are your applilcants and how urgently you need the spot filled.

In the USA...
Just checking - I worked at a hostel in Scotland where the owner was embroiled in a mud-slinging court case with the previous manager - who was eventually found to have embezzled tens of thousands of pounds from the business, including thousands on international phone calls (hostel phone) to his girlfriend abroad.
wish someone would write a book on crazy hostel stories...

Being in a remote location I'd always prefer to see the staff for interview before hiring. This is more just for the employees sake in finding out where we are and what their accommodation etc is like. It's not always possible however. Regarding hiring, I'd say for hostel reception and cleaning a CV is meaningless - they have to be good with dealing with customers and friendly type people. Just because someone has experience in the trade doesn't necessarily mean they are good at dealing with people. In my experience you can teach people front desk systems, computers, how to clean etc, but you can't change an anti social person into a friendly face.

I send either a c.v or just an email to see if they have any work as I'll do anything to get abroad lol and i've had 2 jobs offered to me there on the spot and ive now taken 1 in rome start next month wen i get out there. I dont care about where i stay or what work i have to do i just wanna take in the sights maybe find that place I'll some day call home.

I have recently done it both ways:
I went for a face to face interview, got the job started working and descoverd under the surface the place was horrible and left very promptly, sounds very similer to saoghalbeag's place.
The place I am at now I love, I traveled 12 hours here on the back of 5 mins on the phone and emailing my CV.
I think more than anything a trail week or two will tell you about the person.
