How many Televisions?

Televisions with movies seems to make Backpackers stay longer in Hostel type lodging.

I think the Ideal Hostel would have three television common areas.

1. One for Sports

2. One for Movies, whether DVD's, HBO, Cine Canal, etc.

3. One for non-English speaking people who wish to watch Japanese, Chinese, Korean or other difficult languages.

I would also believe there is needs for other common area or nooks and crannies where people could read or talk, I truly love a Hostel with a flat roof on top for guest to visit.

Long-stay residents want a TV. So if there is only one common area and the hostel wants to appeal to long-stays, they give a TV pride of place. And it's always on, so sociability is greatly reduced.

The hostels that people rave about are the ones where there is no TV, or where the TV is not dominant. You rarely see reviews like: "The hostel is great, I could watch sport/movies all evening!'. (Except reviews written by or on behalf of the staff, identifiable by things such as: only positive things are mentioned; and ALL positive things are mentioned.)

we have one in the bar
we're installing a home cinema
and we might put another in the bar with a Wii.. havent decided yet.

I prefer common areas without TVs. I'm biased through because I play guitar and a lot of the best times I've had at hostels were when several people pull out musical instruments. People share folk music from their cultures, or everyone sings popular songs. It generally doesn't happen as often when there is a TV in the room.

Sometimes a TV can attract people to sit in the same room, but I think there are others ways to attract guests into the same room. If guests have an alternative to a TV I think they will forget about TVs.

I like rooftop common areas...

They are indeed.
We have one each in the lobby and in the bar. I prefer to have them switched off unless there´s something really really interesting on, like world cup football. We´ll also be tuned in on November 4 - I guess there´ll be a lot of people who´ll be interested in the American elections.

I guess we can figure out one...;)

Let's say, you have the bets over the 50 states. You've got the list of the states and people can bet on which side gonna win at that certain state. The loser drinks up at each state! How does that sound? I was also thinking to have the jug reserved for the president but IMHO its 70:30 to Obama anyway!

Better idea!

You need:
- 1 big chalkboard, blue, red and white chalk.
- 5.38 liters = 8 bottles of some decent American whiskey.
- At least twenty participants - otherwise reduce the amount of booze!

Preparation of the game:
Write the whole list of states (with the number of their votes in the electoral college) on the chalkboard with white chalk.
Every player can now write his name next to ten states - with blue chalk if he thinks the Democrats win it, with red chalk if he thinks the Republicans win there.

The game:
When, say, CNN calls a state, the winners can pick up free shots at the bar. Example: Democrats win Ohio. Those who wrote their name next to "Ohio" in blue letters come to the bar to fill up: Ohio has 20 electoral college votes - 20 cl = 10 shots of whiskey will be divided between the winners.

Game strategy:
Place your bets wisely. A bad strategy would be to bet on a Democratic victory in Vermont. It is a sure win, but very little alcohol divided between possibly a lot of unwise players.
A better strategy would be to bet on a Democratic victory in California - the price is more than half a liter of booze, but probably divided between many winners.
If you are sure Obama will win Texas, go for it. Nobody else will. If you are right, half a bottle of whiskey is all yours.

How to rig the game:
It is best to be the last to place bets. Maybe there´s not yet a single bet on a Democratic win in Minnesota? Those 5 shots are almost certainly yours, then. If you´re the bartender and there´s a particular girl you want to make drunk, tell her to wait until everybody has placed his bets and give her some useful hints how to place bets wisely!
