Televisions with movies seems to make Backpackers stay longer in Hostel type lodging.
I think the Ideal Hostel would have three television common areas.
1. One for Sports
2. One for Movies, whether DVD's, HBO, Cine Canal, etc.
3. One for non-English speaking people who wish to watch Japanese, Chinese, Korean or other difficult languages.
I would also believe there is needs for other common area or nooks and crannies where people could read or talk, I truly love a Hostel with a flat roof on top for guest to visit.

Getting back to the subject:
(I write as a person who likes to watch SPECIFIC TV programmes and some sports, but hates TVs that are always on, although they're OK if the volume is down to 10 DB)
What's the point of a TV in a bar?
If there's football or some other popular sport on, I understand completely. But otherwise, it's usually on at low volume, which is fine for those who want to chat, but pretty pointless for those who actually want to watch something. And what's the point of going to a bar if you want to watch something (other than sport) ?

yeah, its mostly for sport - though we do occasionally show slideshows of photos if its their birthday or something. i used to put the visualisation screen from winamp on it, that looked kinda cool.
oh and yeah, if i had that many staff, it'd probably resemble that!

As an American I love my TV. Most foreigners I meet don't watch but that could be because they're too busy traveling the world. If I found out a hostel I was staying at didn't have a TV I'd be upset. I need to know I can watch one if I wanted. I noticed most of the people in hostels who sought out the TV were other Americans. Once we turned the TV on other foreigners would join us and talk about how they never watch it (unless sports is on) and it'd start a huge conversation. We'd all just have a good time watching TV and talking. Plus, half the folks I meet in hostels I meet while watching TV.
I don't feel TV kills the mood at all. It's not like once it is on we become brain dead zombies. As travelers we're not going to waste hours watching it when we could be out exploring and having fun. TV is of no harm unless it's on the Simpsons or Friends. Don't get me started... :)

TV is usually a timekiller. We had a TV in our private apartment, it was on day and night most of the time, regardless the guests were there or in the city. Now we have a radio instead...
We have about 500 movies to watch in our common room, so our guests are more likely became movie freaks. Works well on rainy days!
Make sure you have a home cinema as well! ;)

not yet, my beanbags havent arrived and we're still painting the entry room/snack bar. it'll have a little red-carpet walk way, collage of movie posters and the doors'll be painted to look like the entrance to a movie premier, the exit a limousine. got someone working on it right now actually.

I guess I got to go and visit sometime, it sounds very creative... :)
Do you get the limo from a scrapyard and you've got to cut it yourself or you get it delivered ready-to-build?
