For anyone who uses Facebook, here is an easy way to get started with Twitter.
Download TweetDeck, a program that lets you post your Facebook status updates from your desktop. Your Facebook updates will also be sent to your Twitter account. TweetDeck will also tell you when people reply on Twitter.

How do you find Twitter useful for marketing your hostel?
Twitter is a networking tool and a great place to meet "social media influencers" who can take a message beyond Twitter. It works especially well if you're also blogging.
For example:
- A major factor in increasing search engine rankings is to get inbound links from other websites.
- You need great content to attract links. People generally aren't going to link to a page of hostel rates or a standard hostel photo gallery. That's why I highly recommend creating a hostel blog and/or hostel travel guides on hostel websites.
- After you have the content, the next step is getting people who have online influence to notice your great blog content. Many of these social media influencers can be found on Twitter. [This isn't the only reason to use it, but it's one benefit.]

It takes time to build up Twitter followers so the results aren't visible right away, but I think it's well worth the effort. You can also use Twitter from mobile phones and send short messages from wherever you are.

Tweetdeck is also great for following certain words that appear in tweets.
For example, you can have it watch the name of your hostel, your suburb, tweets with "Budapest hostel", or anything else that may provide useful information.
So you're getting relevant, real time updates about what people are saying about you, you're area, or industry.
