Hi Benden,
I think you can probably get by only speaking English, but it won’t be easy. You’re bound to come across people that you need to work with who don’t speak enough English to communicate (construction contractors, for example). If you know the local language it will help you considerably. Most likely, as you go through the process of setting up the hostel you will inadvertently pick up a large amount of the language, at least the vocabulary related to hostels. That said, if you know you’re going to be doing business in a Spanish speaking country I would definitely start learning as much Spanish as you can. It can only help you.
I’m sure you can also find some kind of free Spanish workshops or language exchange opportunities at your university or in your city. If you don’t have time for a class, can’t afford a private tutor, and can’t find a fluent Spanish speaker to befriend, then maybe try the Rosetta Stone language program on your computer (http://www.rosettastone.com/learn-spanish). I’ve been impressed by the rapid progress my friends have made with it, although I haven’t tried it myself yet.
