I'm in the beginning phases of opening a hostel in the U.S. As part of my business plan, I'm looking for some general market statistics, research and analysis of hostels. I have been searching everywhere for well written documentation but I haven't found anything.
Is any a step or two ahead of me?:confused:

There is good research about Australia´s backpacker industry. Australia is well aware of the importance of this segment. Some cities in Europe also start to realize this now. North America lags (at least) a decade behind, unfortunately. You won´t find much.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Apparently the link on the wiki page to the best looking study is not working. I've followed the link to the original publishers and it appears you need to be a member to access the entire report.
Has anyone verified this, or have access to a full copy?

Which report were you interested in? (I just removed the first one on the list because the link was broken.)
I would be interested in having HostelManagement.com get involved in industry research, but it would require some kind of funding. I think that to fully benefit the hostel industry, this kind of information should be open and permanently available. :)

As of now, I haven't been able to find the report online - however, I have found snippets. If anyone has put together a full market study for their business plans, please let me know and if you consent, it can be added to the wiki page for everyone's use.
I am working on my marketing portion right now and hope to have it done by tonight, so I will post it up here for discussion.

Hostels are becoming more common in the US, maybe we should get a group of folks together to ask the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries to start doing data collection for Hostels. It seems there are people out there who want to open hostels but need the info to make the right choices. Santa is correct, we need to catch up.

It's unfortunate, but I don't think this could happen very easily. Especially considering just how inefficient government offices are - it'd take a very strong initiative from a politician to get this moving I bet.
I have some contacts that may be able to get me industry reports, which then I can put up on the wiki before digesting it myself. I've found a lot of secondary sources on the internet discussing the internet but nothing exceptionally great. I do have a lot of experience writing industry data, but without some primary source documents I'm afraid I won't be able to post anything worthy of benchmarking.
Anyone out there have some good data for the North American market? Perhaps some general or niche tourism numbers that I can analyze?

I've actually just found a U.S. travel agency. A lot of the stuff is under lock and key - meaning you have to purchase it, and at a hefty price - but there are some free XLS and PDF reports.

I didn't see the non-free reports (the website started timing out after I viewed a few pages).
Is the US Government charging for tourism reports? It should be public domain. All documents prepared by the US Government are supposed to be public domain.

That should make sense... but perhaps I misunderstood and it is organized by a third party. There are several 'monthly reports' which breaks down everything into greater detail.
Btw, I've made some progress on those WTO reports that were previously mentioned. It turns out that the WTO uses 'depository libraries' which are managed by universities around the globe. The full list is here. I've reached out to the schools and am trying to weasel a 'guest pass' ...
