Hi everyone,
I'm in the beginning phases of opening a hostel in the U.S. As part of my business plan, I'm looking for some general market statistics, research and analysis of hostels. I have been searching everywhere for well written documentation but I haven't found anything.
Is any a step or two ahead of me?:confused:

Hey Jacko,
I'm interested in the same info. I'm in the middle of building a business plan right now. Have you had any luck finding the resources you were looking for? Where did you go for that info? Where are you trying to open your hostel?

I am working on my business plan and market research for the US as well. Thanks for the links to statistics on youth travel of the WTO - did anyone spent those $40,- bucks?
I also wrote to my Tourism Bureau for data and furthermore hope to get a chance to chat with someone. I found that even small cities rely on Marketing Associations/ Consultants such as DMAI, D.K. Shifflet, IHS Global etc to collect data. There is TIA a non-profit Travel Association (but membership required). In the US each state has its tourism department and OTTI is the federal one (as mentioned earlier in this thread).
To all hostel owners - how has your experience been the past few years? Did you notice the economic downfall? I still like to believe that the hostel market remained fairly stable compared to other hospitality segments - can you confirm that?
I just learned about 'flashpackers' (as described in CNN story linked in 'What Hostels Are and How They Benefit Local Economies') - have you noticed such trend?
