It might not have anything to do with this topic but i have been booking through hostelworld for years and this year and exactly 2 weeks ago, i tried to book a hostel in Malaga and i was rejected because of my nationality! Is it a new trend to descrminate people of a country because the regime is a dictatorship?

You need to book with your credit card and when you type in your credit card number (irrespective of the nationality you choose in the nationality box) the program checks the information and if you are a citizen of one of listed countries, they cancel the booking with a short message, underlining your nationality!

that cant be right - i change my nationality when booking all the time. it does ask what your nationality is when making a reservation and then what your country of residence is when making a CC payment... even then ive had different countries listed (i do have multiple citizenship btw).
and as klaus said; theres no citizens of antarctica. theres no such thing as a citizen of antarctica!

Does US law actually require that people from those countries can't make online purchases from US companies? People from every country in the world live in the US and spend money here all the time in person.

I wonder if the booking system was updated since the purchase. It probably didn't matter before that.

They likely just automatically check the CC card not that the nationality is correct but that you are not from one of the banned countries listed.
ie: So I'm Canadian and I decide to have some fun and put Antarctica as my COR. Th HW system checks to see that I am not from Cuba, North Korea... (all of the "banned" countries) and verifies that I am not from them so it allows the booking to go through regardless of the country of residence I put in the form.
BTW It is a shame that HW is now American-owned, I understand that as a company they must follow US regulations but to discriminate against
