Need advice/insight/info...looking to start a hostel in Kenya.
Hi all!
My name is Sandra and I am currently working on my MBA dissertation which happens to be a business plan for a hostel as I absolutely love staying in hostels everywhere I travel. I'd love to open my own hostel in Nairobi, Kenya and therefore using my dissertation as my actual real life business plan.
I haven't seen any information on here on hostels in Kenya or Africa in general. I have a few questions that I'd like anyone's help on.
1. Have any of you traveled to anywhere in Africa and stayed in hostel?
2. If yes, how was your experience?
3. If no, what would your expectations be?
4. What are the main reasons you choose to stay in a hostel over any other type of accommodation?
5. What makes you pick one hostel over another?
6. Have you ever chosen or cancelled a travel location due to accommodation?
Also any advice in starting a hostel on a tight budget, personal or professional insights, Africa travel stories/experiences would be great.
Thanks in advance :)

Hello Sandra,
This comes quite late but I hope that you will gain some insight from this.
Most hostels in Kenya cater to the university population which is why there is little to no information on HostelWorld. The preconceived notion is that backpackers and basically tourists that come from abroad are either staying in hotels or are already getting hosted by their relatives , friends and host families. For example, a missionary who come to Kneya will probaby be hosted by a pastor or have a host family who are memebers of the congregation who have volunteered.
On a Tight budget, the main things to monitor after furnishing the hostel is water and food consumption. To ensure that there is little to no waste, ensure the food outsourced from the market is enough and in ratio to the amount of guests you might get. For water, ensure that you have extra water tanks to safeguard against lack of water that sometimes occcurs.Safety is an issue out on the streets because it is quite easy for residents to spot who is not a resident, however taking the normal precautions ie. having a security guard and pprobably a few security cameras to monitor the going ins and out of patrons and guests.
If it wouldn't trouble you match, could you also send me the business plan template and any ideas you have decided to implement on your site. I would highly appreciate it.
