Worried about buying the best bunks-Will people be happy to sleep in a 3 tier bed?
If the atmosphere in your hostel is stellar, then people may forgive the 3-tier beds. I wouldn't expect anyone to be happy to sleep in them though.
We are in the middle of a building site at the minute as we plan to Open our new 150 bed hostel in Derry/Londonderry City of Culture 2013UK. We expect to have the builders out by July 2011.
WE would appreciate all the help you can offer?

If you used standard bunks instead of 3-tier beds would you still expect to turn a profit? If you need to boost things a bit, maybe one of your biggest dorms could use 3-tier beds and the rest could use normal ones.

Hi Rucksack Brian,
Yes thats a good Idea! Mix in certain rooms and await feedback
I am so keen at the same time to get it right -but I will make mistakes for sure

I'd say that 3 tier bunks will only be good if you can reasonably expect to be running at near 100% occupancy for a good part of the year. I've no idea what the market is like there, but for a lot of the UK outside the major cities the summer season is quite short. To encourage return business you want to have a good atmosphere, personally 3 tier bunks don't do it for me. I'd imagine that 3 tier bunks would only work in the biggest tourist hotspots like London or New York, where accommodation is at a premium for a lot of the year. If I were you I'd visit some of the hostels that have facilities you are interested in and see what you think of them - and then have the facilities that you are happy with.
We use Backpackonline from hostelworld, and are happy with it. Combined with the HW booking engine on our site we get the majority of the money from online deposits back to us.

I did stay at one hostel with triple bunk beds in Argentina. I meant to post these photos before. I think the design of these wooden beds is really interesting:

The 3 tier bunks I have looked are quite expensive.but!
they are 3m long, have a branded curtain,a night light fitted, made from tubular steel, foam antibacterial mattress ,secure lockable storage underneath and described as a wide and long "Platform"
Have to say the look Very Good!

The answer to that question is Yes and No!
Yes for top and bottom -No for middle
I suppose the more I talk about 3 tier the more I am going off the idea!
Does anyone use them successfully?
Thanks?
