Hi,
My name is Olga.
I am glad to be able to join this site and have a chance to speak with experienced hostel people.
My husband Brian and I are opening a 48 bed hostel in Burlington, VT and are targeting to open in June.
Recently there was a publication about our Hostel in the "Burlington Free Press".
It caused a big stirr. Lots of people think a hostel is a shelter for drunk ones to stay for cheap and if we don't allow them in the hostel it will be a discrimination. Do you guys have a problem like this?
Is it a way to avoid non appropriate guests and local people?

In regards to the undesirables make sure you accept valid ID (passport, dl, etc), accept only guests with luggage( garbage bags don't count). And regarding locals just put it out there that you are a travellers hostel. Our motto is if you can walk home in a day you are local and all the other hotels will be able to take you. Discrimination is only an issue if you refuse people based on sex, background, etc. Discrimination based on where you live (local) is not an issue although with you being in the states, you never know.Good luck. And remember to get yourself on the online booking engines now. Summer goes quickly.

Great to hear about your hostel -- for a while the number of hostels in Vermont was decreasing, but it seems to be picking up again. :)

Burlington seems like a great location -- right between Montreal--New York City and Montreal--Boston.

I always see the signs stating "We reserve the right to refuse service" in bars, restaurants and hotels. If a guest showed up noticeably drunk I think you would be justified in refusing to let them in.

Is the problem actually turning away the would-be guests or convincing the neighborhood that you're not catering to them?
