Start a Hostel

Me an the missus are lookin a buying a 58 bed hostel in the highlands of Scotland
we have no previous experience and were not hostelers :eek:
any idea or advice would be appreciated
ideas on booking software - websites
general running
staff requirements
Hostel rescources/info
anything at all
we plan to change a coupla rooms to Family rooms. is this a good or bad idea :confused:
All Input is a appreciated especially from folk who run hostels and have a family as we have 3 kids

Main recommendations: Have a good and well-equipped kitchen, and a good social area without a telly. Plenty of advice about the area, not just publicity leaflets. Definitely have family rooms, but keep them flexible; a large family may pay for a whole bunk room, and on the other hand if you have no families you will want to use those rooms for individuals.

yeah we do have a place in mind not far from fort william
it is allready a hostel we found out about it thru a friend

we thought maybe the family would have a double a single and maybe a bunk
i need to measure up proper to see what will fit where
thought maybe try an do the family rooms as en-suite
so kiddies dont need to go finding toilets in middle of the night:D
where abouts are you based?

think there maybe a few folk gettin the odd free night in return for advice/help/labour may even have some of em usin a paint brush:D:D

I am based in Shropshire, but I visit Scotland at least once each year.

58 beds is quite large for that part of the country, so you are probably wise in thinking about families and varied types of travellers. But if you have a mixture, don't forget the individual backpackers and make sure they are well catered for.

well theyve put a closing date on the sale of the hostel an we'll not have all our funding in place by then so looks like well have to wait for something else to come up
were in no rush:D
