Thank you so much for your useful information. I believe I'll be able to gather some pertinent data this way. Regards/
Hello,
Questions for hostel owners-
What occupancy rates did you see during your first 12 months of operations?
What does your occupancy rate average now?
What city is your hostel located in?
I don't have many hostels in my area to gather this information from so I'm hoping that I can work out some approximations from this forum.
I'm happy to share my final results with anyone that responds.
Regards,
Ian

Hi John (and anyone following the thread, pls feel free to give feedback)
Do you think it would be a better idea to check this occupancy data on OTAS by sifting for the least popular hostels in rank and looking at their data? This way one can have an idea whether the least popular hostels are doing ok, then obviously the rest of the hostels might be doing fine. Also, if the least popular ones aren't doing good business, then one can keep checking data of hostels up in the order of ranking of popularity and see how the other less unpopular hostels are doing. This way one can get an idea of how the hostels in general are doing in Budapest. What do you think?

The numbers in Budapest are a little misleading because many of those 200 hostels are small apartments with only one or two rooms and a handful of beds. Some of them are great, and some are not, but I don’t know if their occupancy levels are necessarily indicative of the rest of the market.

You would probably get more relevant information by checking the hostels that are the most similar to the one that you want to open. Their situation will tell you more about what you’re likely to face with your own hostel.

Thanks for your reply, Brian. However, I have observed, on Hostelworld for example, that even if I check the availability much before check-in cut-off time, I cannot book any room for that very day (but I can do for the next day only); can anyone explain this phenomenon? I mean can't we book a bed on the same day online (as that day's booking option seems disabled)?
Also, on that very day (when I am checking the availability), all the rooms are marked 'X' or booked for that day. (Ofcourse, for the next day we are able to book if bed available). So does that mean that no bed was available for that day (on which I was checking the availability) or it means that we can't book online for the day on which we are checking for availability of bed(s)?
Thanks if anyone can guide on this.

When I was first with Hostelworld I had this issue. I think by default it is set that you cannot book on the day of arrival but the hostel has to contact HW to change this.

I think you'll struggle using OTAs to work out occupancy rates. Not all hostels release their entire inventory to the OTAs for example.
Have you tried just going in and having a talk to the managers of some of the more highly rated properties? If you approach them in a friendly manner, you might be surprised at how willing they would be to help you out with information.
(My original comment below doesn't make sense in the context of the thread. Oops!)
I think that the setting you are looking for is release date in the hostelworld back office.
inbox.hostelworld.com > Property Setup > Microsite Content
Scroll down and it's just under all the description boxes. If you set it to 0, then you can get same day bookings.

Thanks guys; conclusively, I think, as per my experience, observing the hostel bookings on various websites on a consistent basis will give a good idea of whats the occupancy levels of the various hostels in a particular area/city and of particular (hostel) types we are interested to know about/

Hi, im copying this from another related thread. pls advise, anyone in the know...
Suppose there is a 40 bed hostel in a 300-320 sq m space in central/ busy district(s) of Prague (I & II), Czech Republic. It provides all the facilities at very competitive rental rates plus has nice clean comfortable surroundings with all amenities that a good small sized hostel can have. No corners are cut to provide decent and comfortable facilities to the guests. Free beverages (hot & cold), FREE: towels, hair dryer, soaps etc. Laundry from customers charged minimally, bed-lamps, entertainment system, PCs, wifi, lockers, baskets, privacy curtains, the works...
That said, can anybody having hostel experience, in Prague, CZ, give me any idea of what can be the occupancy level of such a place in that location in the first year. Can it be possible to have 35% occupancy in the first year's winter (4 months) and around 63%-64% occupancy in that year's summer (8 months)?
Thanks//
