Off-Topic: McCain's VP Choice

I am trying hard, but I can´t make sense of that. Sometimes, when I read about American politics, it reminds me of a Friedrich Dürrenmatt quote:

"A story is not finished until it has taken the worst turn."

This woman sounds quite literally insane to me. She says she´d oppose abortion even if her daughter was raped. She wants creationism tought in schools, instead of Charles Darwin. And these are her more serious opinions. She admits she has no clue about foreign policy and posessed no passport before 2007.

McCain is 72. I just googled some statistics - the probability he dies before he is 76 years old (when his 1st term would end) is 15,4%. Wait, he had cancer, so it is certainly higher.

So - if McCain wins that election, we have a one-in-six chance (like in Russian Roulette!) that this woman will get the launch codes for 5000 nuclear warheads.

I might follow the example of Dürrenmatt´s physicists and turn myself in to a lunatic asylum.

Bizarre indeed.

What are they thinking? How are their grey cells wired? I´m trying to emulate their operating system but I realize deliberately being stupid is not that easy... :D

somehow how i doubt he chose her on the basis that she'd actually make a good VP, or president if he dies. that is of course assuming he doesnt plan on dying whilst in office... 'assuming'...

obama went with the older, experienced VP choice to balance out his weaknesses - lack of FP experience, the 3am call etc and to add a bit more depth to his current superficial flashiness.

mccain i think, has done the opposite. he's running as the experienced wannabe-statesman. palin gives him youth, good looks and certainly a more conservative basis (gun nut, religion etc) as until now he's been quite moderate (relatively speaking).

he picked her as a running mate, IMO, to help get him elected. media appeal. gutsy to say the least.

that, or he's hoping he can swing a clinton but with his VP rather than an intern - he's certainly got a history of fooling around.
