Open an Hostel in Italy

Hi to everybody!
as some of us when i travel i staied in a lot of hostels and i found great places with a beautiful atmosphere and others unbelivable dirty and unfrieldly.....and i my mind there is the idea of my “ideal” backpacker hostel with the possibilty to include environmental aspects (i work in this field).

i'm curious to know what do you think about hostels in italy...i saw a lot of difference about italy's hostel and hostel, for example in the north of europe...if you have some experience to tell and what do you think about the possibility to open a backpacker hostel in italy...usally foreigners know Florence, Rome and Venice but in Italy there are a lot of other great cities could be very interesting for backpackers travelers...(for example Bologna, Ravenna, Verona)....i would like to know your opinion about hostel's situation in Italy and if there's someone interested to invest time and money to try to open an hostel in Italy

I think Italy is the perfect place for a hostel. It is also a place where it is not too difficult to convince people to travel away from the main destinations. There is a lot of competition in Rome, but other towns and cities can really do with more hostels.

Italy has so many nice cities and a lot of them only have one or two hostels. Also travellers know that there are lots of nice cities outside Rome and Florence so they are more likely to make the effort to visit a hostel if it has a good reputation.

If I were to open a hostel in Italy, my first choices would be Padova, Milano and Torino; although it would certainly work in Bologna, Ravenna and Verona as well.

For big cities, Milan and Torino really need more hostels; but Padova is probably a better spot as it is close enough to Venice to be a viable alternative to the Venetian hostels.

i think that padova is in a good position to visit Venice and also Milan and Turin need some other hostel.
but i think that also bologna is a great city to visit
some problems to realize this project in Italy are burocracy (very slow and with a lot of permissions to obtain) and the high costs to buy a building and also only for rentals (for example a 90 square meters apartment close to the centre in Bologna has a rent around 1200 euro/month and a price of 250.000 euro)
anyway i think that this kind of accomodation in italy is not developed like in other country and there are a lot of possibility

Hello Marco

I was also considering opening a hostel in Italy - my idea was Padova too and I was recently in Bologna - lovely place but i would not risk investing in Bologna - just not enough demand i dont think.

Ravenna, Rimini, Florence, Padova and Milan would be better - even further south is also a great idea. Last year I stayed in the best and worst hostel which was ideally located in Italy.. good and bad are found in all countries.

If you would like to talk further about this then let me know. I have been considering italy for a hostel for a loing time. lets talk and get to exchange ideas.
