Hi everyone!

I am Nikolay from Moscow! I am planning to open a hostel but still not sure about the location. Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, maybe Ukraine or Russia. I need a lot of information before I start so I find this web-site pretty useful. See you in other threads:)

I think
Moscow is very touristic city.
Riga and Krakov as well , but there are too many hostels there .
St Petersburg and Moscow are very good cities for the hostels.
I do not know about Tallin and Beograd.
Beograd is the city of fun , there are the tourists there on a weekend .
But I do not know if the hostels idea is going to work out there.
If you own the property in Beograd then you can rent it and never be a looser but if you rent it and make hostel from it , I think its too risky .
Beograd has high standards hostel and the prices are cheep.
Moscow sounds good ! There is no low seasons in Moscow. Moscow its a high season all year round !
You can not compare Moscow with Kiev or any other cities.
Another country is an extra head ache about ....papers , business papers ...how the people of that country or how the authorities will treat you...
But may be its a good to be a pioneer and to open a hostel in some Big Russian hostel , where there is no hostels at all.

i mean some big Russian city .
I am sure there are a lot of cities in Russia which backpackers would like to visit. But they do not know about them because of the absence of hostels there at the hostels web sites.

Thanks for your reply, Peter!
Yeah, you're right about St.Pete's and Moscow, good places to start a hostel but the current legislation and high rent make it more difficult and less beneficial. As for other cities and towns in Russia, I think that sill few backpackers go there as this country is pretty tourist-unfriendly.
I lived in Belgrade last year, including a few months in a hostel. There are about 40 of them there now, too many for this city I think...
Ukraine (Kiev) seem to be an interesting city for developing hostels and they, together with Poland are hosting Euro 2012, so more opportunities again.
I think that for me the main problem is that I am not a EU citizen, so far I've got no idea how hard it would be to start a hostel there for me. That's something I have to find out as soon as possible.

Odessa , Cremea , Lviv ... these cities are seasonal , what you made in high season - you spend for low season surviving .
Lviv is worst option , because in low season some hostels make price from 1.5 or 3 euros per night . The hostels which have 70-80 beds.
And in high season they charge 5 euros including breakfast.
And new mega hostels are about to be opened there.

Odessa is very good option , if the hostel is seasonal .
Its extremely busy there during the high season...about 4-5 months.
And in low season is survivable.

Cremea is getting popular destination for the tourists.

Last year in Kiev was very busy even in low season , but the hostels projects are initiated there among the property owners and more and more people are opening the hostels , and I think soon some big students hostels will operate as a backpackers hostels because of the coming of EURO2112.

Tbilisi is very good city to open a hostel , ( its touristic and there is no hostels there ) but the problem is in that Russia-Georgia conflict.
Also , in ex-Yugoslav.countries , I think - Saraevo is very good city. ( the tourists go there all year round )

What about Minsk ?
Many backpackers would like to visit Belarus

You are wrong saying there are no low season in Russia.
Everyone knows Russia is a snowy cold country (and of cause with the bears on the streets haha), so nobody wants to go there in the winter time - it's a dead season (exept New Year holydays).

And you are also wrong saying there's no hostels in Russia - go to Hostelworld any you'll see many different hostels. Soon in Moscow will be opened new Mega hostel with 240 beds! In St.Pete we have new hostel with about 150 beds. There are also many small hostels.

No problem -- I'm in the process of developing non-English sections of the forum, and would like to have more languages represented. :)

I would like to add a Russian-language section, but only if there are enough users here who speak Russian to make it worthwhile...

hmm you right, but as I heard, this one will be one of the cheapest in Moscow, so it's a strong competitor for other hostels.

Have you got any details of that huge hostel to be opened in Moscow? Location, dates? Cheers!

But a '' huge hostel '' is ''mega hostel ''
and these types of hostels do not have so personal , friendly , home and fun atmosphere as the smaller hostels from 10 till 40 beds.
Some hostels operate in the students boarding - houses , but many backpackers would preffer to stay in the apart-hostels or small hostels , because the mega-hostel is almost like a hotel type.
So , if the mega-hostel is about to be opened , it is not a very big problem.
