Hi
My girlfriend and I and out little boy are are looking at the possibility of opening a hostel in France. We both live in the UK at the moment but travel in france a great deal.
Is it just me or is the a lack of hostels in france, I have travel all over the world and stay in hostels and always manage to find a hostel but i have struggled in france.
If anyone out there know why this might be I would like to know, and info on opening a hostel in france would be welcomed.

Hi !
There are some hostels in France for hikers and that kind of people (mountain bikers..) known and registered as "gite d'etape". If you plan that kind of hostel, you will find support, advises and help for it. I plan to open mine during next year near Fontainebleau (focused on the international climbers/boulderers of the area). But Fontainebleau is also a top tourist town: it has also a superb palace.
Anyway, keep in mind a hostel has to follow the same safety and access regulation (for disabled) as a hotel (24 h presence, first class fire alarm with professionnal maintenance, closed staircase...). The key word: it is an "ERP", "etablissement recevant du public". And be aware the time frame for a brand new hostel may be long: I have worked 2 years on my project !
Where do you want to open your hostel ?

We are looking to open in the Medoc area along the Atlantic coast to catch the kite surfers, windsurfers and surfer. I know it is mainly seasonal but I was in the area last week and had to pay a fourtune for a place to stay and it was so hard to find anywhere open.

I think it's a very good idea ! And if there's neither wind nor waves, the guests can tast the Médoc wines and visit Bordeaux !
From my experience, you can contact the CDC (comité départemental du tourisme) and present the hostel as a gîte d'étape for surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers and hikers + bikers as a second target group. Before, visit http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/fr/gites_d_etape_sejour# . You can get subsidies and help !

We are looking to buy a house in the area early next year and once we have settled in we will look into setting up a hostel.
Main two problems being out limited knowledge of the France language and finding the right building at the right price. They are is so expensive and the closer you are to the beach the better but that again costs more.
