To Prepare or Not To Prepare The Bed for New/Old Guests

How did you do it? What is expected of a Hostel manager/owner when someone Checks in?

Detail:
Our Hostel have large open air vents and our property is sitting in front of a busy street.

Our environment is dusty and the area we cleaned in a matter of hours before is dusty again.

Business is very slow right now because we just opened shop recently.

Ideally, I would've asked my Housekeeping staff to fix the bed before guests go in to set down but I also heard from others that guests receive their blankets, towels, pillow case, and linen in one tub upon checking in - giving the guest the job to wrap their flat bed sheets on the mattress themselves.

I lost two housekeepers because the job apparently is too tough to do it all for the clients checking in at the same time (We have 30-beds).

What is the most practical yet easy or "traditional" for operations in Hostels?

If I'm missing details, I'm sorry, but all suggestions will be noted. I'll give my reaction immediately too.

Hi Krisatienza,

It really is up to you! I have a hostel of 25 beds and we have been open for 4 years. We have always made the beds because I have the following problems:

matterasses can be stained
not all materasses match

and many Italians do not expect to make their own beds! (we are in Italy)

I have travelled alot and have been in many hostels where you are given the linen at check in and you make your own bed.

I would advise you to evaluate the following from a customer point of view:

The up-side to checking-in and having the bed ready is that you don't have to make it yourself.

The up-side to checking-in and having the linen handed to you is that you are sure it is clean! (Many people think hostels don't wash the linen, crazy!

Anyway, I hope this ha given you some ideas.

I guess it's really better to prepare it for them because what matters is hospitality.

In my opinion it's best to prepare the beds for the guests. It looks nicer, and if you don't, then your guests may not bother to make the bed and just sleep on the bare mattress instead.

In our hostel (50 guests) we prefer not to make beds for guests for several reasons:
1. Guests can be sure that the linen is clean.
2. It's much easier for administrators to spot available beds if smth's wrong with booking system.
3. It's really difficult to catch up changing sheets and blankets on your own, when a group of 15 is checking out and a group of 20 is about to arrive at any minute.
4. We've never had any complaints from guests about this.
But i think it's always up to the hostel, this issue can't be judged in terms of what is right or wrong :)
