I saw my first hostel rat on this Asia trip. The hostel was very clean, but there was a big rat crawling across the common room floor late one night.
I don't know much about rats because I don't think they are common in the US. Maybe a hostel cat or two would be a good solution? Possibly two cats needed to take out a rat of that size... :D

Being right next to a river we get unwelcome rodents. One year, maybe 10 years ago, the girls were screaming there were so many of them. Since that time I have kept 2 cats here, the only problem now is that they love to present me with the entrails on my doorstep early in the morning.
A tip: feed the cats first thing, then they go hunting at night.

suggestion on how to solve rats problem...
***maintain strict cleanliness in the hostel, everywhere and even in nooks or corners we don't normally look at
***make sure old foods or trash are kept in huge trash cans with covers before garbage trucks come to get them, not just in plastic bags or on the floor even outside hostel area, because rats can eat them...
***a cat or two would be good idea, I agree. some cats are quite charming and fascinates some guests too

Having cats can really save you from this trouble, but that's still not 100%. What really could help you is placing good old mouse traps. Here's the review to prove my words. That's a crude method, but I've tested it myself and it works. You can also buy modern traps and catch those rodents without killing it. You can sell it after :D
