Salaries - Wages
hi all,
I am very interested in jumping into the backpackers hostel management world, and would like to know approximately how much a Hostel manager earns along with the size of your hostel. If you don't mind sharing your numbers to give me an idea, I would appreciate.
Cheers,
Iaara

Hi iaara, I did some basic research about Hostel Managers for a school assignement. I interviewed three GM`s of Hostels here in the US and found the lowest paid was $36,000/year up to $60,000/year. I do not know how useful this is becausse it is a different country and these were large, full service properties in major tourist destinations. Check with the Kiwi Dept of Labor to see if they hold any stats on "Hostel Managers" failing that try "Lodgeing Manager" instead, it should give you a general idea of salary.
Good Luck
Patrick

Thank you for your reply.
It in fact gives me an idea of revenue for big hostels.

I was going to answer almost the same thing for the USA: $35,000- to $60,000+ depending on the hostel :)
(Accommodation sometimes included -- sometimes not.)
The highest salary for a hostel I've seen advertised was the equivalent of $95,000 at a large hostel in the UK when the pound was stronger. I've also heard a story about a hostel manager making well over 6 figures due to generous bonuses.

36K?? Maybe for a really big place. I have heard $800 to $1200 with room and some board included (of course utilities, internet etc included). Obviously this is not meant as full time work. Most of my GM's have had other side jobs as well (guitar on the street, web development, other retail job, or involved in their own projects ie. video/music editing etc.)

Hi seematt, Yeah, by no means would I call my interviews statistically valid, I was just trying to get a general idea of wages. The three GM's I talked with were year round permanent positions. My assignment called for three sources and that is all I got. As we know hostels come in all shapes/sizes and locations, thus having a big effect on salaries. Another reason for variations in pay would be the knowledge, skills, abilities and qualifications of the applicant, work experience being another factor. It is safe to say one does not get into this line of work for the riches, more of a labor of love.
